Don’t stuff your site with links. Lots of links on a web site will most certainly throw up red flags for Google. Focus on getting high-quality backlinks as those are weighted more heavily than poor-quality links. As always, relevancy is important too.
Don’t go overboard with content. Contrary to popular belief, more content does not mean more traffic. Don’t jam-pack your site with massive amounts of low-quality content or you may see traffic dropping. Concise, neat and high-quality is the way to go.
Not writing good title tags and description meta. The title should accurately describe your page or what you are selling on the page. Your description can go into greater detail, but should still be rather short to avoid truncation on search result pages.
Pass on complex navigation systems. Navigation bars with too many links will make search engines flag your site as possible spam. Not to mention, a complex navigation bar is much harder for the end-user. Instead, try using a simple navigation bar and leaving the links for elsewhere on your site.
Avoid listing your site on social bookmarking services. Social bookmarking services consist of sites that exist solely to provide backlinks. Unfortunately, these links are often poor-quality and easy for Google to root out. Many of these sites have been removed from Google indexes altogether.
Don’t waste time submitting your site to link directories. Good directories list established websites. Sites like “Best of the Web” and “Yahoo! Directory” are good, but the thousands of others are really quite useless. Old-school SEO link directories are being found and removed by Google every day.
Don’t use spun content. Spinning content and using keyword stuffing tactics will always be cheaper than hiring someone to write it for you, but article spinning software is common and not always that effective. Creating a spun article and submitting to an article directory is basically useless since Google tends to flag duplicate content for removal when indexing sites.
