Web Directories

A web directory is a site that displays a categorized list of links to websites. The database of websites is usually searchable but is very different from a search engine in that the web directory does not spider the sites and only lists sites that are submitted to its database, often by the site owners. It does not search the internet for sites that match your query.

Web directories are not all the same. Some are general and have a wide variety of categories and others specialize in a language, subject or niche. Some web directories are automated with software automatically vetting the sites before adding them and others are run by a human editor. There are advantages to both systems.

Another significant difference is that some web directories are paid and some are free offering a listing in exchange for a reciprocal link.

A human edited web directory is seen by many as offering a better service than the automated one as the human can do a better job of filtering out span and inferior sites improving the standard of the site list and providing a better link to the listed sites for SEO purposes.

Some web directories offer what has become known as a bid for position system. This means that you can get the top position on the page you are listed on by outbidding the others on that page.

Getting your site listed on a large number of directories is a good way of getting backlinks and increasing your site's traffic.
